I have Java updates on set up in a policy with our remote system. I have it run a script (i have to update it for all older versions of java) first to uninstall all old versions. Then it installs the newest version. If for some reason it fails, it does remediation on user log on.
Java Install or Update did not complete – Error Code 1603
I struggled with this "Java Update did not complete. Error Code:1603" on a single user's workstation, after a vendor's website demanded the latest version of Java (Java 8 Update 31 at the time of this writing...till they update it again tomorrow :-) )
Check your antivirus application. For example, McAfee VirusScan Enterprise uses a feature set they call "Access Protection". Within the policies for Access Protection is an option to block the installation of browser helper objects and shell extensions (within the "Common Standard Protection" category). If this is enabled, then there is no way you will get Java installed. McAfee produces a generic MSI 1603 error, and Java install will reflect that with the same generic 1603 failure code. The reason it's so generic is because something abruptly killed the MSI process and in some cases that is your AV :) :)
Wow, I have been banging my head against the wall attempting to install java on several machines that kept that kept receiving error 1603. Once I disabled LogMeIn, Java installed on every machine. Thanks, huwelphillips!
Java error code 1603 occurs when the installer detects a Java-based application running in the background. It generally represents that the application that you are trying to install is already present on your system.
Note: Since the actual reason for this error code 1603 on Windows 7 is not determined yet thus, it is recommended to try each and every method and then try to install the application.
TIP. Of course, you should check and connect to the Internet. After all, error 1603 when installing Java occurs just because the update is not completed. Also, from simple actions, it is immediately worth scanning the entire system with an antivirus. It is likely that malware is to blame for the failure of the installation.
It does not provide such radical methods of solving the problem as reinstalling Windows. It is unlikely that each user will reinstall the OS to fix the error 1603, associated with only one work of Java.
The sign explains that enabling this option will prevent Java installation. Because security software frequently blocks Java, your antivirus could be the source of Java error 1603. As a result, to add Java, you should temporarily disable security software:
Malware developers often take advantage of the Java flaws and therefore installing the new updates of Java is quite important to prevent the system from possible attacks. But when Windows users install the Java updates, they run into Java error code 1603. Why does this happen? How to fix it? MiniTool answers all the questions in this post.
What can cause error code 1603 on Windows 10? The reasons for this error might be different. It is possible that the Java update you ware try to install is been blocked by antivirus software, web software or other programs that are running Java.
As we have mentioned, the most possible reason for Java error code on Windows 10 is that Java has been blocked by security software. Therefore, you can try to temporarily disable the software and then install Java.
The error 1603 is a generic error code generated by Microsoft Windows Installer (MSI) that indicates a problem during the installation. This error is more likely to be system-related than software-specific.
Sometimes error 1603 may also occur if antivirus software is not up to date. Please make certain that the antivirus software is up to date and/or temporarily disable your antivirus software until the installation of the software product is complete.
The error 1603 might occur on a computer system that does not have enough disk space to install the setup and store rollback files. This space is required on the root drive even if the setup may be installed to a different drive. Check that there is enough space on the root drive of the computer system. This space is required by setup to decompress files in the temp directory and store rollback information in the Windows directory of the computer.
I have Firefox 39.0. The Next Generation Java Plug-in 11.45.2 for Mozilla browsers shows it is vulnerable. When I try to update my plugin on Firefox to the Java version 8 update 51, it downloads and will try to install, but will not complete the install. I get the error message 1603. I am trying to use the 32 bit online version.
This error message is displayed by the Microsoft Windows Installer Engine (Wondering whats this? Read here) and is a general error code that indicates a problem occurred during the installation. There are plenty of Java-based applications that are installed on our systems. We should keep the Java technology up-to-date in order for our applications to run at their maximum performance. Most of these programs automatically check for Java updates and download them on your behalf or ask for your permission depending on your settings. However, sometimes you might see an Error Code: 1603 while installing these Java updates. This error code is shown when a fatal error occurs during the installation. The error will come up with a message saying that you need to close the applications that are using Java and it will give you the name of these applications in a list.

The error will come up with a message saying that you need to close the applications that are using Java and it will give you the name of these applications in a list.\r\n\r\nThe error is caused by, as the error message tells you, a Java-based application running in the background. The Java update won\u2019t install if a Java-based program is running. So, closing the application will solve the issue. However, if the application mentioned during the error isn\u2019t running in the background then your focus should shift towards the other causes. There are a couple of things that can be the root of this problem.\r\n\r\nThe first one is that the application you are trying to install is already installed. This is, of course, for the people who are installing Java and not updating. The problem can also be caused if you don\u2019t have proper or enough permissions. Lastly, the error can also happen if the installation folder is encrypted.\r\n\r\nSince there are a few things that can cause the issue, there are plenty of methods that might work for you. So, go through each of them until the problem is resolved.\r\nTips\r\n\r\n \tRestart your computer and try again. These problems sometimes get resolved by a restart.\r\n \tMake sure you have admin privileges. Run the installer by right-clicking and selecting Run as administrator.\r\n \tMake sure the drive you are trying to install on isn\u2019t encrypted.\r\n \tIf you have BitLocker enabled then disable it and try to install again.\r\n\r\nMethod 1: Close Application\r\nThe first thing that you should do is try to close the program that the error message mentioned. The easiest way to see if the program is running or not is to check the task manager.\r\n\r\nHere are the steps to find and close the Java-based program.\r\n\r\n \tPress and hold CTRL, SHIFT and ESC simultaneously (CTRL + SHIFT + ESC)\r\n \tThis will open up the Task Manager\r\n \tGo through the list of processes and check if the program mentioned with the error is running. If you see that specific program then select the application and select End Task (bottom right corner).\r\n\r\nThis should solve the issue. Once done, try to install\/update the Java again and it should work just fine.\r\n\r\nNote: If you can\u2019t see the program in the task manager then try to install\/update Java while keeping the Task Manager open. It is a bit weird but a lot of users have successfully installed\/updated Java by simply keeping the Task Manager open.\r\nMethod 2: Get Rid of LogMeIn\r\nIf you are a network administrator who is trying to install Java via remote access through LogMeIn then that might be the problem. LogMeIn will cause this error even if everything is fine. A lot of the users especially the network administrators have solved the issue by getting rid of LogMeIn.\r\n\r\nSo, either try to access the machine directly or use the RDP or something else for the remote access and installation. The point is, don\u2019t use the LogMeIn for the installation task.\r\n\r\nNote: If you really have to use the LogMeIn then there is a workaround as well. Use the LogMeIn to start the Java update\/installation. Disconnect the LogMeIn as soon as the Java update\/installation kicks off. The installation process will continue (hopefully). Then reconnect after a few minutes when the installation is complete. This isn\u2019t a solution but more of a hack that has worked for a few people. So if you really have to use LogMeIn the give it a try.\r\nMethod 3: Use the Java Control Panel\r\nUnchecking and checking the option Enable Java content in the browser has solved the issue for a ton of users. This option is available in the Java Control Panel that can be accessed via the control panel. So, follow the instructions given below to change these settings.\r\n\r\n \tPress and hold Windows key and press R\r\n \tType control panel and press Enter\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n \tClick Programs\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n \tYou should be able to see Java in this window. Click Java \r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n \tSelect the Security tab\r\n \tUncheck the option Enable Java content in the browser\r\n \tClick Apply\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n \tCheck the option Enable Java content in the browser\r\n \tClick Apply\r\n\r\n\r\nNow retry to install Java. It should work flawlessly.\r\nMethod 4: Uninstall Previous Versions\r\nSince the problem can be caused by an already installed version, you should try to uninstall the previously installed versions of Java. One of the reasons behind this issue is \u201cthe program you are trying to install is already installed\u201d. So, check the installed program list and uninstall the Java if you find it in the list.\r\n\r\n \tPress and hold Windows key and press R\r\n \tType appwiz.cpl and press Enter\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n \tLook in the list and check for Java or JDK in this list. If you see Java then select it and click Uninstall.\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n \tUninstall both 64-bit and 32-bit versions.\r\n \tReboot the system\r\n\r\nOnce done, try the installation process again and check if the problem persists.\r\nMethod 5: Using Offline Installer\r\nIn some cases, the error might be triggered because the update\/installation cannot proceed properly. Therefore, we can utilize the Java Offline Installer to update it. In order to do that:\r\n\r\n \tBefore proceeding, using the above method, uninstall all Java components.\r\n \tDownload the Offline Installer from here.\r\n\r\n\r\n \tRestart your computer and run the installer.\r\n \tFollow the on-screen instructions to complete the installation.\r\n \tCheck to see if the issue persists.\r\nNote: If this doesn't work, repeat the process again but while selecting the installation location select desktop and install it on a new folder in desktop. You can later add it to the path but this fixes the issue for some people. Also, you can try to download Java from here and install it in the same manner.\r\n\r\nMethod 6: Install Service Pack\r\nIn certain cases, users experienced that if they were on an operating system older than Service Pack 1, they couldn't get Java and some other apps to work properly. Operating systems such as Windows XP and Windows Vista are no doubt very outdated now and with many newer versions of Windows available, it seems fruitless to keep using them. Therefore, you can download and install Windows 7 Service Pack 1 from here.","publisher":"@id":"#Publisher","@type":"Organization","name":"Appuals.com","logo":"@type":"ImageObject","url":"https:\/\/appuals.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/10\/apuals_new_logo_B-1.png","publishingPrinciples":"https:\/\/appuals.com\/about\/#go-to-editorial-guidelines","sameAs":["https:\/\/facebook.com\/appuals","https:\/\/twitter.com\/appuals","https:\/\/www.linkedin.com\/company\/appuals\/","https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/channel\/UCR--2QnA0vYBfqsmSI3pQ9g","https:\/\/www.crunchbase.com\/organization\/appuals"],"author":"@type":"Person","name":"Kevin Arrows","url":"https:\/\/appuals.com\/author\/admin\/","description":"Kevin is a dynamic and self-motivated information technology professional, with a Thorough knowledge of all facets pertaining to network infrastructure design, implementation and administration.
